The Document Templates (a.k.a. Composer Templates) are the most important part of the Composer as they define how a document should looks like and what data should be included in the resulting document.

To create a document template you can do it through the Template Designer or through the Document Template Record Page. The Template designer is the recommended way to do it as it offers a Visual Editor that also prevent you from making a lot of mistakes. If you really know what you are doing, is also possible to edit the template directly on the record page.

Although all the different setup options are seemly integrated in the Template Designer it’s important to know how the Templates are configured, so in the next table we list all the different configuration options available:

Option Description Values
Name The name the document template will have and will be shown in the different parts of the application. This is the name the end user will see. Any valid string
Object Type The object type the template will be available for. Keep in mind that a document can only work for one and only one object type. Any existing Salesforce Object Type

Draft, Active and Inactive
Version The version number. This must be unique for that Document Template. It’s just an identifier. Integer
Root Version It’s a lookup to the first version of that template. It’s the way Composer relate all the different versions of a template. The source/root version does not have any root version set. A Document Template
Filename Prefix The prefix to append to the resulting document filename. It’s a free text. In case it’s empty the Template Name will be used. Any valid string
